The major events of the last few years have seen a steep rise in the number of journalists’ jailed, murdered, arrested and censored around the world.

There has also been a similar increase in the introduction of regulatory laws that chill journalistic practice, often introduced with the stated purpose of, for example, ‘stopping fake news’.

Axios, American based media publisher and innovator, has published these insights based on the CPJ report published at the end of 2020. Axios states the flow on effects of the Trump presidency have created a fertile landscape for democracies to be undermined in this way. They also state that President Biden is not seeking to rectify this quickly or forcefully enough.
