Lesley Power joins Alliance for Journalists’ Freedom as CEO

The Alliance for Journalists’ Freedom (AJF) welcomes Lesley Power as CEO.

Lesley is an experienced media executive and lawyer, having been General Counsel at SBS and member of its Senior Executive team with a distinguished record of lobbying for legislative reform to support media freedom, for 20 years.

She has also served as director on the boards of a number of arts organisations, is a member of the Communications Committee of the Law Council of Australia, has lectured in media law for over 30 years and is a joint author of the 6th edition of Australian Media Law published by Thomson Reuters in 2021.

Peter Greste, AJF Director, says:

“We’re completely chuffed to have Lesley joining the AJF. She brings a deep well of knowledge and experience in an ever-changing industry to our team. Her wide legal experience is also massively helpful given our work to support the function of journalism in Australian law.

“The organisation has grown recently, with Bermet Talant joining as Journalist and Researcher, while Olivia Pirie-Griffiths, who has been Executive Director since 2019, moves to part-time roles as Head of Policy, and Company Secretary. It’s a terrific team and we’re excited to continue driving our policy initiatives, and other projects, with Lesley at the helm.”

Lesley says:

“The AJF has built itself into a respected and influential organisation which focuses on outcomes, not talk-fests. Their balanced approach to legislative change and advocacy has always appealed to me. I’m delighted to be joining the team.

“The AJF will continue to drive legislative change in Canberra, work on introducing a Voluntary Certification Program for journalists, and develop our existing initiatives in the Asia–Pacific to build trust and relationships that support press freedom. I can’t wait to get stuck in.”
